Why is the city of Venice sinking? It's long been known that Venice suffers from subsidence. Built on a muddy lagoon with inadequate foundations, the ground beneath it has slowly compacted over time. But the literal sinking of Venice, which averages something like a few centimeters per century, is only part of the problem.
